WJMS Speaks

WJMS Speaks is our new initiative to bring more spoken word to your air waves! There are very few radio stations broadcasting Spoken Word pieces on their airwaves regularly. Well, WJMS Radio is doing just that!

Every hour on WJMS you can hear a new clip from one of our poets below!! Check them out, show them some love, and most importantly, tune in every day to hear their work!

... Meet Our Poets ...

Spoken Word (n)  is poetry intended for onstage performance, rather than exclusively designed for the page. While often associated with hip-hop culture, it also has strong ties to storytelling, modern poetry, post-modern performance, and monologue theatre, as well as jazz, blues, and folk music.

Speaking Life into The Mic...

Due to its immediacy and direct rapport with its audience, this type of poetry often contains references to current events and issues relevant to a contemporary audience.

At its best, spoken word is a powerful, high-energy form of expression that attracts artists and audiences of all ages from a wide range of disciplines and socio-cultural backgrounds.

Anwar White

I'm Anwar. A name carefully chosen by a mother who wanted the world for her son. Will the world ever see the shining light that my namesake has me destined to illuminate? My story has just begun. just blocks away from the neighborhood that raised me. With a BSN from Temple, I thrived in a neighborhood where statistics wouldn't dare place me in my current position but here I am. Just sit back and listen as I journey through the thoughts that wander and often get lost within the black mind.
