WJMS Speaks

WJMS Speaks is our new initiative to bring more spoken word to your air waves! There are very few radio stations broadcasting Spoken Word pieces on their airwaves regularly. Well, WJMS Radio is doing just that!

Every hour on WJMS you can hear a new clip from one of our poets below!! Check them out, show them some love, and most importantly, tune in every day to hear their work!

... Meet Our Poets ...

Spoken Word (n)  is poetry intended for onstage performance, rather than exclusively designed for the page. While often associated with hip-hop culture, it also has strong ties to storytelling, modern poetry, post-modern performance, and monologue theatre, as well as jazz, blues, and folk music.

Speaking Life into The Mic...

Due to its immediacy and direct rapport with its audience, this type of poetry often contains references to current events and issues relevant to a contemporary audience.

At its best, spoken word is a powerful, high-energy form of expression that attracts artists and audiences of all ages from a wide range of disciplines and socio-cultural backgrounds.

King Will

I'm 24 years young, in school at Howard University studying to become a teacher. I grew up the only male of three children. I took to the streets fairly quickly. In the beginning the lifestyle was lavish and I loved it. However, nothing but pain and carnage awaits those who lives that way. I was taken in by my mentor who ultimately made me face myself. He showed me how to look inside and help me battle my omens. Those that I conquered left; the ones that stayed was taken to God.
